To help you create and maintain a beautiful garden that thrives in the desert
Who am I and how can I help you?
Hello! I am delighted you are here. This is the home of Through the Garden Gate, a garden membership and community for desert dwellers. I'm all about helping you create the garden of your dreams and learning how to care for it the right way. Most importantly, it's about having fun in the garden! As a horticulturist, I've worked with thousands of people like you who struggle to garden in a hot, dry climate, to turn their garden goals into reality and I'm here to help you too!
No matter whether you are brand-new to the desert with no ideas where to start, a long-time resident who is tired of a lackluster outdoor space, or if you are tired of wasting time and money with little to show for it and are looking for more help and support, I've got you covered. I have resources in the membership to help you make the progress you want, no matter what stage you are at.
You want a landscape filled with healthy plants that thrive in a hot, dry climate but have no idea how to achieve it.
You are confused by conflicting information provided by so-called garden experts and have no idea who to trust.
You'd love to know what plants do well in the desert with little fuss.
You're tired of paying a landscaper to care for your landscape as they don't seem to much more than "mow, blow, and go" and turn your flowering shrubs into balls, cupcakes, and squares.
Most of all, you wish you had someone to guide you in the desert landscape.
Pleasure to meet you!
Hi! I'm Noelle Johnson.
You may know me better as 'AZ Plant Lady', horticulturist, landscape consultant, instructor, and author of the popular gardening blog, Ramblings From a Desert Garden.
I've built a successful career as a landscape consultant and instructor where I help people like you learn how to garden in a challenging climate.
But, I didn't always know how to garden in the desert - there is a long trail of dead plants in my past to prove it. I killed just about everything I planted. However, I knew that there had to be a way to learn how and I was determined to figure it out.
After learning my degree in horticulture and a 25+ year career, I have been helping desert dwellers learn how to successfully create their own landscape in a hot, dry climate.
Throughout my career, I've taught at the Desert Botanical Garden and Tucson Botanical Gardens. I've also worked with the Associated Press, Houzz, NPR, PBS, Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine, and the folks at Water Use It Wisely. All, to help people like you garden in the desert.

Noelle does a wonderful job of conveying truly helpful information in a way that's encouraging, upbeat, and not at all intimidating. Even though I consider myself a pretty knowledgeable gardener, I always learn new things I can implement in my own garden.

This is amazing!
Getting into Noelle's group was a no-brainer, seriously.
But, it wasn't because it was a brilliant and affordable idea, but because I have gotten so much VALUE from what you offer in your blog and free content that I wanted to learn more.
It's impressive and I'm excited to see where you'll take it next.
- KARA JORDAN
What an excellent resource for newbies to the desert!
So many books and materials on the internet really aren't suited to the desert. Noelle's membership offers a truly affordable easy way to get access to targeted information and personal feedback unlike any other resource out there.
I have learned more in a month than I every could have on my own.
