Pleasure to meet you!
Hi! I'm Noelle Johnson.
You may know me better as 'AZ Plant Lady', horticulturist, landscape consultant, instructor, and author of the popular gardening blog, Ramblings From a Desert Garden.
I've built a successful career as a landscape consultant and instructor where I help people like you learn how to garden in a challenging climate.
But, I didn't always know how to garden in the desert - there is a long trail of dead plants in my past to prove it. I killed just about everything I planted. However, I knew that there had to be a way to learn how and I was determined to figure it out.
After learning my degree in horticulture and a 25+ year career, I have been helping desert dwellers learn how to successfully create their own landscape in a hot, dry climate.
Throughout my career, I've taught at the Desert Botanical Garden and Tucson Botanical Gardens. I've also worked with the Associated Press, Houzz, NPR, PBS, Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine, and the folks at Water Use It Wisely. All, to help people like you garden in the desert.

I love this group and its resources as I continue my gardening journey.
I have quickly learned that desert is completely different. I enjoy Through the Garden Gate for the resources it provides and also the camaraderie with other desert gardeners.
I learn so much from coaching sessions with Noelle and the questions others ask. And it’s FUN to see photos from other gardeners and exchange ideas on the Facebook page!
Noelle is a delightful person as well as a skilled horticulturist. She is encouraging and knowledgeable. I love this group and will continue to use it's resources as I continue my gardening journey.
- DENISE AHOLA
I couldn't be more grateful for this group!
Before joining TGG, I spent far too much time, money and frustration because I relied on gardening knowledge common in the rest of the US. After joining, I've transitioned quickly after learning about native plants that thrive in the desert along with the watering, pruning and planting best practices which often contradicted what I thought I should be doing.
I'm also appreciative for the community since we are learning together. I couldn't be more grateful for this group!
- KELLY AZIZI
I love the encouragement from Noelle and fellow members!
I joined 2 years ago totally new to desert gardening. My back yard was composed of rock, 3 boulders, and a fountain - that was it!
Since joining, I have learned so much about soils, the right plants to use, how to prune correctly, and watering tips.
I love the encouragement and answers not just from Noelle but from so many others in the Through the Garden Gate "family". My yard is now beautiful!
This is amazing!
Getting into Noelle's group was a no-brainer, seriously.
But, it wasn't because it was a brilliant and affordable idea, but because I have gotten so much VALUE from what you offer in your blog and free content that I wanted to learn more.
It's impressive and I'm excited to see where you'll take it next.
- KARA JORDAN
I get the advice and answers I seek!
I’m a fairly experienced gardener who moved to the desert a couple of years ago. “Through The Garden Gate” gives me advice and answers I seek from an experienced desert gardening professional and I get the added advantage of an online community of motivated gardeners. We face many of the same challenges, after all. Thanks Noelle and group.

Through the Garden Gate opens up a couple of times a year for new members
There is a reason that registration for Through the Garden Gate only opens a few times a year.
I like spending more of my time serving my members vs. promoting to my audience. So, enrollment is only open for a short period of time. This enables me to focus my energy on teaching, supporting, and helping members create, grow, and maintain a thriving garden that brings both beauty and joy.
